Season 0 · The Empty Chair

The good old days

Everyone misses the good old days. Nobody likes to remember who paid for them. The people at the Table never forgot.

How it started

The ’80s, neon yearsCocaine money built the Ocean Beach hotels and the mansions on Starfish Island. The city still gets misty-eyed about those years and never asks where the money came from.
The 2000sWhen the feds leaned in, the families went quiet. The money disappeared into towers, construction firms and shell accounts. The names changed. The ledgers didn’t.
Last year: DeliaHurricane Delia flattened the port and half of Grassrivers. Billions in rebuild money came down from the state, and five people decided how to split it. That was the birth of the Table.
Day 0Daniel Price, head of the Port Authority, washed up off Terminal 3 on the morning he was due before a federal grand jury. The ledger he never let out of his sight is gone. Days later, Mayor Warren Cole resigned. The special election is November 19, and the slogan is already on every billboard: bring back the good old days.

The Table

  1. 01City HallThe zoning chair. Decides who wins which contract and which building gets its permit. Their name never shows up on paper.
  2. 02The BadgeThe VCPD deputy chief. Arranges protection, tips off raids before they happen and makes evidence disappear. Also prefers to stay out of sight.
  3. 03MarchettiThe family runs the port union and the concrete business, and washes its money through Ocean Beach nightclubs. Don Sal Marchetti is behind bars, and his heirs are at each other’s throats.
  4. 04La MareaThe network moving product and guns through the Keys and Grassrivers. No one has ever seen who runs it. Everyone calls her La Madrina.
  5. 05The empty chairPrice’s seat. The next mayor appoints the next port director, so whoever wins the election fills this chair too. That’s why the families are bankrolling candidates.

Questions nobody has answered

  • Who killed Price?
  • Who has the missing ledger now?
  • Who wins the election, and whose money is behind the campaigns?
  • Who brings down the Table: the FIB, a stubborn reporter, or the seats turning on each other?
